What questions should I ask a builder during our first meeting?
We're meeting with a builder tomorrow to tour a model home and view some lots in a neighborhood they're developing. This is our first time going through this process, and we want to make sure we understand the quality and actual costs involved. Does anyone have suggestions for specific questions we should ask to get a clear sense of the builder's work, the total cost, and any potential hidden fees or challenges?
Personally, I would approach it with the mindset that the builder needs to convince you why they’re the right choice for your home. Ask questions like: "Can you tell me more about your business?" "What sets you apart from other builders in the area?" and "Can you walk me through your homebuilding process?" It's also important to get a clear understanding of their pricing structure. This ensures that you're not locked into a contract for a certain amount, only to end up with unexpected costs—such as an additional $50k—by the time the project is completed.
