What are the advantages and disadvantages of installing a second layer of shingles on a roof compared to tearing off the old layer and applying a fresh one?

I’m replacing my roof, and the quote to add a second layer of shingles on top of the existing roof is significantly cheaper. What are the potential disadvantages of this approach?

Remove it completely. This will ensure it lasts longer and gives you the opportunity to inspect the plywood underneath for any damage or water issues that could lead to mold, decay, or even more expensive repairs down the line. While it may cost more upfront, you'll only have one layer and can monitor it for any potential problems. Keep in mind, some states and regions don’t permit multiple layers on roofs.
