I’m planning to build an addition to my home. When is it really worth the investment?

The cost of additions (we were quoted $265-350 per square foot for a ground-level primary suite addition) makes the idea seem impractical. For over $150,000, the price to add a 500 sq ft primary suite, I could likely find a house that offers more than just an extra bedroom and bathroom.

It’s not worth it because spending $150k for just an extra 500 sq ft, especially considering material costs and the abundance of labor needed. I’d suggest reaching out to a few design-build firms or architects who can help you make the most of the space you already have.
