What is the difference between residential and non-residential property?

I'm really confused about what makes a property residential versus being categorized under any other category.

Residential property refers to real estate primarily designed for living purposes, such as single-family homes, apartments, townhouses, and condominiums. These properties provide housing for individuals and families. In contrast, non-residential property includes real estate used for commercial, industrial, or other non-living purposes. This category covers office buildings, retail spaces, warehouses, factories, and hotels, all intended for business operations or services.
