What is the difference between advertising and marketing?

I've noticed that some people say they're in advertising but not marketing, or vice versa, and I wanted to understand the difference between the two since I always assumed they were somewhat interchangeable.

Advertising is just the tip of the marketing iceberg. How you develop your product, set your price, determine where to sell, and identify your target audience—basically, how you operate in the market—is all part of marketing. Advertising, then, is the execution of your market positioning through communication. It's a bit oversimplified, but that's the general idea.
