Which is more cost-effective over the long term: an electric furnace or a gas furnace?

We're in the process of replacing our electric furnace and can't decide whether to switch to gas or stick with electric. The gas line is already installed and ready, but we're still unsure.

Electric heating is generally more efficient than gas, but gas prices are usually much lower than electricity rates. While rates can vary across the country, gas is almost always the cheaper option when given a choice between the two.
