Plumbing Questions and Answers

What does a plumber do?

A plumber works on the water supply and drain systems in your home. Typical jobs include fixing leaks, repairing or replacing faucets and toilets, installing fixtures and appliances that use water, replacing corroded pipes and valves, and running new lines during a remodel.

When should I call a plumber instead of trying a repair myself?

Call a plumber when a leak is inside a wall or ceiling, pressure drops throughout the house, a fixture keeps failing after simple fixes, or the job means cutting into pipes or moving fixtures. If water is actively leaking, close the main shutoff valve first, then call.

How do I choose a plumber?

Look for a company that regularly handles your type of job, explains the problem clearly and puts the estimate in writing before work starts. Ask whether your state or city requires a plumbing license for the work, confirm the company is insured, and read reviews from other customers.

What affects the cost of plumbing work?

Cost depends on the repair or installation, how easy the pipes are to reach, the fixtures and materials you choose, and whether walls, floors or ceilings must be opened. After-hours visits and work that needs a permit can also change the price, so ask for an itemized estimate.

How should I prepare for a plumber's visit?

Clear the cabinet or area around the problem fixture and make sure the plumber can reach your main water shutoff and water heater. Note when the problem started and anything you have already tried, and keep pets and children away from the work area.
