An HVAC contractor installs, repairs and maintains heating and cooling systems, including furnaces, air conditioners, air handlers, ductwork and thermostats. They diagnose problems, perform seasonal maintenance and size replacement equipment for the home.
Repairs often make sense for a newer system with a single failed part. Replacement is worth discussing when equipment is older, needs frequent repairs, uses a phased-out refrigerant, or no longer keeps the home comfortable. Ask the contractor to compare both options in writing.
Look for a contractor who performs a load calculation before recommending new equipment, explains options clearly and provides written estimates and warranty terms. Ask whether technicians who handle refrigerant hold EPA Section 608 certification and whether local licensing or permits apply.
Repair costs depend on the part and diagnostic time. Replacement depends on equipment type, capacity and efficiency, ductwork changes, electrical or gas work, and local permit requirements. Maintenance plans, rebates and the season you schedule in can also affect the total.
Clear access to the furnace or air handler, the outdoor unit and the thermostat, and replace or check the air filter if you can. Note what the system is doing, such as noises, short cycling or uneven temperatures, and when the problem started.
