A window contractor measures openings, helps you choose window styles and materials, removes old windows, installs new units with proper flashing and insulation, and finishes trim. Some also cut new openings or enlarge existing ones.
Insert replacement fits a new window into the existing frame and disturbs less trim. Full-frame replacement removes the old frame, which allows inspection for rot and better flashing. An installer can recommend the method after checking your frames.
Compare window brands, frame materials, glass packages and energy ratings, along with installation details, cleanup and warranties for both product and labor. Ask whether a permit is needed and who measures and orders the windows.
Cost depends on the number, size and style of windows, frame material, glass options, the installation method, repairs to rotted framing, interior and exterior trim work, upper-floor access and local permit requirements.
Remove window treatments and hardware, move furniture away from windows and clear a path for the crew. Take down fragile items nearby and plan for rooms to be open to the outdoors briefly while each window is replaced.
