A tree service prunes and trims trees, removes dead or hazardous trees, grinds stumps and cleans up storm damage. Many employ arborists who assess tree health and recommend care.
An arborist is trained in tree biology and care, which helps for pruning decisions and health assessments. Some hold certification from the International Society of Arboriculture, which you can ask about.
Ask how the crew will protect your home and landscaping, whether cleanup and stump grinding are included, and confirm the company carries liability and workers' compensation insurance. Be cautious of anyone recommending topping trees.
Cost depends on the tree's size, species and condition, how close it is to structures or power lines, access for equipment, the number of trees, stump grinding and debris hauling.
Move vehicles, outdoor furniture and decor away from the work area, and secure pets. Point out septic systems, irrigation and fragile plantings, and check whether permits are needed to remove trees in your area.
