A tile contractor prepares the surface, installs backer board and waterproofing where needed, lays out and sets tile, then grouts and seals it. They also repair cracked tiles and failing grout.
Hire one for new tile floors, backsplashes and shower walls, or when tiles crack, grout crumbles or a shower starts leaking. In showers, a properly sloped base and continuous waterproofing behind the tile matter as much as the tile itself, so ask which waterproofing system the installer uses and how niches and benches are sealed.
Look at photos of completed work, especially showers if you need one, and ask how they prepare the substrate. Compare estimates for removal, materials, waterproofing, layout complexity and trim pieces.
Cost depends on the area, tile size and material, layout pattern, substrate preparation, waterproofing, removal of old tile, and details such as niches, edges and cuts around fixtures.
Have tile, grout and trim selected with extra for cuts and future repairs, and clear the room. For showers or bathrooms, plan to use another bathroom while the work and curing are underway.
