Septic system contractors design, install and repair the on-site wastewater systems used by homes that are not connected to a public sewer. Their work covers septic tanks, distribution lines, pumps and the drainfield (leach field) that treats water in the soil.
Common septic system services include:
Call a septic contractor if drains back up, sewage odors linger outside, the ground over the drainfield stays soggy, or you are building on a lot that needs a new system. Routine pumping has its own category.

A septic contractor installs new septic systems and repairs existing ones, including tanks, pipes, pumps, alarms and drainfields. Many also inspect systems for home sales and help owners understand the soil testing and design steps a new system requires.
Common signs include slow drains or backups throughout the house, sewage odors near the tank or drainfield, standing water or very green grass over the drainfield, and a pump alarm that keeps sounding. Pumping alone may not fix these problems if part of the system has failed.
Look for a contractor experienced with the system types used in your area, ask how they will diagnose the problem before recommending replacement, and get written estimates. Septic work is often regulated locally, so ask what permits, soil tests or inspections the job requires and who handles them.
Cost depends on the size and type of system, soil and site conditions, the depth and accessibility of components, whether a pump or alternative treatment is needed, and local permit and design requirements. Restoring landscaping after excavation can also add to the total.
Gather any records or diagrams of your system and know where the tank lid and drainfield are if possible. Keep vehicles off the system area, plan for reduced water use during the work, and make sure equipment can reach the site.
