A home security installer designs a layout for sensors, cameras and keypads, mounts and wires or connects the devices, sets up the control panel and app, and tests the system. Some companies also provide professional monitoring, while others install equipment you monitor yourself.
Professional monitoring means a central station responds to alarms, while self-monitoring sends alerts to your phone. The right choice depends on your budget, how quickly you could respond yourself and any insurance requirements. Ask about contract length and cancellation terms before signing.
Compare equipment, installation and monitoring terms side by side, and ask whether you will own the equipment. Check whether your state or city requires alarm installers to be licensed and whether alarm permits apply, and read the contract carefully before agreeing.
Cost depends on the number of sensors and cameras, wired versus wireless equipment, video storage, smart-home integrations, installation complexity and any monthly monitoring fee. Some systems are priced low upfront but require long contracts.
Walk through your home and note entry points, areas you want covered by cameras and where you want keypads. Make sure your Wi-Fi password is handy, clear access to doors, windows and outlets, and plan to be home to learn the system.
