Masonry Questions and Answers

What does a masonry contractor do?

A masonry contractor builds and repairs brick, stone and block construction, including walls, steps, veneers, columns and outdoor features, and repoints deteriorated mortar joints.

When does masonry need repair?

Call a mason when mortar joints are crumbling or recessed, bricks or stones are cracked, loose or flaking, or walls and steps are leaning. Repointing, also called tuckpointing, replaces failing mortar to keep water out, and matching the original mortar matters on older buildings. Prompt repair helps prevent water damage behind the masonry.

How do I choose a masonry contractor?

Look at examples of similar work, ask how they will match existing brick, stone or mortar, and compare written estimates. For older or historic masonry, ask about experience with softer, traditional mortars.

What affects the cost of masonry work?

Cost depends on the material, the size of the project, the condition of existing masonry, mortar matching, height and access, scaffolding needs and structural repairs.

How should I prepare for masonry work?

Clear the area around the work, protect plants and outdoor items nearby, and plan for scaffolding or ladders. Ask how the crew will protect surfaces from mortar and clean up when finished.
