A flooring contractor removes old flooring, repairs and levels the subfloor, and installs new flooring such as hardwood, luxury vinyl, laminate, carpet or tile, along with transitions, trim and stair treads.
Replacement makes sense when floors are worn through, water-damaged, loose, stained or dated, or when a remodel changes the room. Water-resistant materials such as vinyl or tile suit kitchens, baths and basements, while hardwood, laminate and carpet are common in living areas. Worn hardwood can often be refinished instead.
Ask about experience with the material you want, how they prepare and level the subfloor, and what the estimate includes, such as removal, moving furniture, trim and disposal. Ask about warranties on both materials and installation.
Cost depends on square footage, material, removal of existing flooring, subfloor repair, room layout and stairs, moisture barriers and furniture moving.
Clear the rooms of furniture and belongings unless moving is included, and remove fragile items from nearby walls. Some materials need to acclimate in the home before installation, so ask about delivery timing.
