A chimney sweep cleans soot, creosote and debris from the flue, smoke chamber and firebox, and usually checks for blockages such as nests. Many sweeps also inspect the chimney's condition and recommend repairs.
Fire safety organizations commonly recommend an annual chimney inspection, with cleaning as needed based on how much you use the fireplace or stove and what you burn. Your sweep can recommend a schedule after the first inspection.
Ask whether the company performs written inspections, what level of inspection it recommends and why, and whether it shows photos or video of problems. Some sweeps hold industry certification, such as from the Chimney Safety Institute of America, which you can ask about.
Cost depends on the type of chimney and appliance, how much buildup is present, roof height and pitch, the inspection level and the repairs needed, such as a new liner, crown or flashing. Access issues can also add time.
Stop using the fireplace at least a day before so it is cool, and clear the hearth and nearby furniture. Make sure the crew can reach the roof or attic if needed, and mention any smoke, odor or leak problems you have noticed.
