What is the best approach for dealing with building inspectors?
We are currently building a single-family residential home and are dealing with city building inspectors. What is the proper way to handle interactions with them?
Treat building inspectors with respect. They are there to ensure the safety of the general public, and you want them as an ally, not an adversary. Building inspectors have various specialties, and if you're present during an inspection, most are willing to answer questions and offer guidance. Rule #1: Never argue with a building inspector over a code issue. In most cases, you’ll lose the argument, and the inspector might start looking for additional violations, which could lead to more problems for you. Rule #2: Keep your work area clean and organized. For example, the National Electrical Code requires work to be performed in a neat and professional manner. When inspectors see that everything is tidy and in order, it increases your chances of passing the inspection. At most, they might only point out a minor issue for you to fix. Rule #3: If the inspection requires a ladder, specific equipment, or someone to be present, make sure everything is ready and available. Inspectors won’t be very forgiving if they have to return for another visit due to missing equipment or personnel.
